I can't even believe I'm writing about this situation, but here it is:
The Supreme Court is discussing whether School Administrators (NOT Police Officers) have the legal right to strip search students. There's two things that really boggle my mind about this situation:
1) The drug the Administrators were looking for on the plaintiff? IBUPROPHEN. Plus, they didn't even have solid evidence that she had it.
2) “My thought process,” Justice Souter said, “is I would rather have the kid embarrassed by a strip search, if we can’t find anything short of that, than to have some other kids dead because the stuff is distributed at lunchtime and things go awry.” (from the article)
There has never, NEVER been a case where one student has given another student any drug of any kind and it has resulted in the death of another student. I'm wondering how often this happens (in all cases) and how often the result of this situation is a hospital visit for the student receiving the drugs. This is another "for the children" BS excuse to remove basic rights from kids in public schools. Here's an idea: When kids start school every year, send a paper with the following written on it for parents to sign:
I, the undersigned, permit School District Administrators to strip search my children when they have justifable cause or evidence that they have broken school rules.
See how many parents sign it and how much outrage will occur because of it. Because that's what the Supreme Court is deciding without asking permission from parents.
