Am I The Only One?
Jan. 10th, 2006 12:27 pmI love science fiction shows, and the only reason I miss having cable is because I can't watch new episodes of Stargate SG-1, and repeats of old Farscape. I started missing cable even more when I heard that the Sci-Fi channel was playing repeats of Firefly, but what can you do? I could just get Farscape and Firefly on DVD, but that doesn't help me with SG-1 now, does it? These shows call out to me in some primal technologically-driven way, and I love to watch them. The week between new episodes, back when I had cable, would drag on as I waited impatiently to watch how the SG teams would handle whatever new problems cropped up.
Knowing how much I love these shows, my well-meaning friends have often suggested that I get DVDs of, or get cable so that I can start watching, the new Battlestar Gallactica. "It's amazing," they gushed when it first came on. I had cable back then, and how could I argue with that kind of suggestion? I flipped on the sci-fi channel, and sat back, waiting to be entertained, looking forward to yet another show that I could get addicted to.
I have a secret to tell you all. I hated Battlestar Gallactica, and I think I'm the only one.
I saw the second episode, and the third. Within fifteen minutes of each I was bored, looking for something else to do, grabbing a book to read, and contemplating flipping the channel to see if there was anything else on that I might like. Who was this guy? Why did I care? Did they really matter to me, at all? Wow, that guy's not a good actor! Oh, is he dead now? Good, didn't like him anyways. Wait, that person doesn't even exist?
Maybe there's something new, maybe it's changed in some way since then, or it could just be the exact same time. I couldn't get into it then, and I really can't picture me trying to get into it now no matter how much better it may have gotten. It's been quite some time since I watched it, and I know my memory isn't perfect, but I quite literally don't remember anything about the show, and that says something. If I can't remember it at all, it's obviously not memorable, so is it really worth renting on DVD or getting cable to watch?
I don't think so.
Am I a bad sci-fi fan for not loving this show that's widely accepted as the best thing to ever hit the science fiction air waves since Star Wars?
