Mar. 8th, 2006 07:56 pmMy life has been shaped by books. My father used to gush that when I rented a video game, the first thing I would do was read the manual, and would be done with it before we got home. Considering these things weren't tech manuals (you remember Nintendo game booklets, right?), I always wondered why he was amazed by the fact that I could read an entire manual in the ten minute car ride home.
If given a choice between reading a book and going to the movies, I would almost always choose the book. I was quite as insane as my Uncle Steve, who would decide to do both at the same time, but still, books always came before movies, especially if I was in the middle of a particularly good bit. This is almost still true, though I realize that I can't put off things like work to read a good part all the way through. I'll even read a book during movies now, but only the movies I watch here at home.
I'm in a rut though.
See, I read only fantasy lately, and while that's great, it's not quite who I want to be - I want to experience the gamut of books. Hell, in my teen years I even found a romance novel or two that weren't too horrible to get through. No, seriously.
So, I'm going to list the top 5 authors I like, and I would appreciate feedback as to who they would roughly translate into in other genres.
Or just suggest more fantasy authors I would like. I appreciate that too.
1) Robin Hobb
2) Ursula LeGuin
3) Diane Duane (Particularly the young wizard series)
4) David Eddings
5) Raymond E Feist
