I've decided to join up on a site that theoretically pays you to write "How To" articles.

Please take a quick look at my first How To: How to Approach a Stranger's Dog

I would love to hear any feedback you may have, and would appreciate all the eyes on the article that I could get.

Thanks!

Not bad, but I would add two things... 1. Don't give a nice, toothy smile. To the dog, this is barring your teeth, which is a threat gesture. 2. Try not to tower over the dog. Bend down in front of the dog's face. Towering over is another threat that can be taken by the dog as a challenger for dominance.

Actually, while I agree with your first point, your second point is flawed. The problem is that being in front of the dog's face is an even bigger dominance challenge.

There are a few things I can add to it though, like "no eye contact," and the "toothy smile" bit. Thanks!

I'd say something about don't stand face on to the dog, stand with your side. Also, I'd recommend not moving toward the dog, let the dog move toward you. Make sure the dog always feels like he or she can move away from you if the contact is not desired.

Good thoughts, thank you. I will be adding a few things to the article tonight.
