I think my default setting is "relax." This can be good for my blood pressure, and my state of mind, but normally bad for the things that happen around me. The kitchen gets in a state of disrepair because something okay was on TV; my office gets to be a mess because I was surfing the 'net instead of taking some glasses to the kitchen to clean them; the laundry doesn't get done because I'm in my office, drinking some juice, surfing the 'net, instead of putting in laundry. It's a cycle.
I've been trying to break the cycle for a long time, and what I've found is it comes down to catching myself in the act of relaxing instead of doing something. That's not to say that relaxing is bad, of course, because that would be foolish, and setting myself up for failure. I don't want to do that.
What I want to do is find a good balance. If there's nothing good on TV, but I have energy, instead of vegging out in front of just okay television, I should probably go do stuff around the house, especially since we're trying to remodel it and make it look all nice and new. If there's a show on TV that I really want to watch, like Dr. Who Fridays at 9 PM on Sci-Fi, then I'll do that! If, however, it's the Sarah Jane Chronicles on an hour before that, a show I believe that is made to appeal to a younger crowd than my own, maybe I can do some dishes, or paint a wall, or just something else.
It's about changing my default setting from "relax" to "get things done without burning out." I wish there was a word for that. I'll call it "reldon."
Yes. From now on, my default setting is "reldon."
